How to have a device Managed by Michigan Medicine

Introduction

If you have a device that is not managed by Michigan Medicine and you would like to be able to connect to Michigan Medicine secured networks and/or store sensitive data please refer to the below flowchart for your devices options.

Note: If you need to access sensitive data or you are a clinician/nurse the best possible scenario is to work with HITS to purchase a Michigan Medicine Managed Windows device. Devices can be purchased directly from HITS by using our product catalog

Instructions

U-M Owned Device Path (Recommended)

U-M Owned Device Definition

Devices are considered U-M owned when they have been purchased or reimbursed by U-M funds such as a Shortcode or Grant. For more details read our section on U-M devices on the personal devices page.

Mobile Phone/Tablet

If you have a U-M owned mobile phone or tablet that needs to be configured please Submit a Ticket to work with your local device support team.

Mac Laptop/Desktop

Recommended Path: Work with HITS to purchase a device using our Macbook Consult or iMac Consult catalog item. The device will be delivered and setup for you as part of that process.

However, if the device is compatible with MacOS 10.15 or later and was purchased with departmental funds from approved resellers such as U-M TechShop or M-Marketsite, it should be able to be built with our CoreMac image. You can request your device be configured by using our Workstation CoreImage Request.

Standard Windows Laptop/Desktop

Recommended Path: Work with HITS to purchase your device using our HITS Catalog. The device will be delivered and setup for you as part of that process.

However, if you purchased a device with departmental funds and it is listed on our Supported Hardware Models list you can request your device be configured by using our Workstation CoreImage Request.

Non-Standard Windows Laptop/Desktop

If you purchased a device with departmental funds and it is not listed on the Supported Hardware Models list please Submit a Ticket to work with your local device support team to see what your options are for getting the device managed.

Personal Device Path

Personal device definition:

Devices are considered personal if they are purchased with personal funds that are not reimbursed by Michigan Medicine grants or shortcodes. You may sometimes hear support staff refer to this as BYOD (bring your own device).

For more details on personal devices and their support options read our Personal Devices page.

Mobile Phone/Tablet

If you have a mobile phone or tablet and need access to Michigan Medicine's secured networks, you can enroll your device in HITS' Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform. If you need assistance with enrolling your device in MDM check out our enrollment guide.

If you just need access to Michigan Medicine (Level-2) email or other Microsoft 365 resources HITS recommends using office.com with your uniqname@med.umich.edu and Level-2 password.

Windows or Mac Laptop/Desktop

Recommended Path: For personally owned Windows or Mac devices HITS strongly recommends using Windows Virtual Desktop to access sensitive data from any network location.

Alternatively, if you need to store sensitive data or access Michigan Medicine's secured networks such as MFleet, please Submit a Ticket to work with your local device support team to discuss your options.
