The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the highest-ranked public university in the nation and one of the world’s preeminent research institutions.

The University's Eisenberg Family Depression Center is partnering with various departments to recruit several faculty positions, including endowed professorships, research professorships and early career professorships. The Center is eagerly soliciting faculty applications from highly competitive candidates at assistant, associate, and full professor levels.

Specific areas of focus include precision mental health, digital technology, data science, and prevention of mental health problems; but, all work with the potential to impact depression is within scope.

The successful applicant will join a vibrant, 150+ community of faculty across Departments who are passionate about depression and bipolar research and care. Departments for this search include, but are not limited to, Anesthesiology, Biostatistics, Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Internal Medicine and its subspecialities, Math, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Psychology.

About Our Center

The Eisenberg Family Depression Center, established in 2001, is the first of its kind devoted entirely to bringing depression into the mainstream of medical research, translational care, education, and public policy.

Our mission is to catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations that produce high-impact advances to improve the mental health and quality of life for individuals suffering, their families, and communities.

Our Center is changing the paradigm of how depression and bipolar illnesses are understood and treated.

The research conducted at our center is driven by the urgent need for novel and transformative breakthroughs to combat the continued rise of depressive illness.

The EFDC is actively investing in Core units to create a monumental shift in our model across research and clinical practice.

Our Cores work together to offer the latest advancements in data science, neuroscience, and technology development through a range of resources and tailored services. Our goal is to empower scientists and foster connections to bring forth the bold ideas that will launch depression research into a new age.

Opportunities to Accelerate Discovery

Research Innovation Core: There is an urgent need for novel and transformative breakthroughs to combat the continued rise of depressive illnesses. The U-M is home to world-class research in a number of fields that have immense potential to impact depression. The Research Innovation Core serves as a university hub that brings together scientists from various disciplines to explore new lines of collaborative research. Access to high-impact, idea-generating events, funding, personalized faculty support and other tailored services, offers our members the support needed to develop novel approaches to the complex research challenges surrounding depression.

Data & Design Core: Early-career scientists with creative, untapped approaches to research often face barriers to launching their practice. Our Data & Design Core accelerates the research design cycle by providing U-M scientists with tailored support at any stage. This includes mentorship and guidance from subject matter experts in depression research as well as individualized consultations, database access and analytical support. A central focus on the Core is to provide support, guidance and mentorship to early-career researchers using an ‘incubator’ model. We believe that empowering a diverse, interdisciplinary research workforce will lead to more innovative approaches to depression research, treatment, and prevention.

The Mobile Technologies Core: Technology has the potential to transform mental health research and care. The latest advancements allow us to assess measures of sleep, circadian function and activity objectively, in real-time and at scale. Researchers across the U-M are conducting innovative work in these areas. The Mobile Technologies Core empowers our members with knowledge, access and standardized processes to utilize cutting-edge wearable and smartphone technology to enhance their studies. Our center aims to reduce barriers and encourage collaboration around mobile technology research and its potential to improve mental health outcomes globally.

In addition to these Core units, the EFDC has an established Outreach & Engagement Program that develops and disseminates high-quality, evidence-informed education and intervention initiatives. For the past 20 years, these efforts and award-winning programs have helped reduce stigma, increase early identification and prevention of depression and related illnesses, and promote healthy communities.

Our Facility

The EFDC will soon reside in a new facility within the University of Michigan’s North Campus Research Complex (NCRC). In its entirety, the complex includes 28 buildings comprising 2.1 million square feet of office, research and manufacturing space acquired from Pfizer in 2009.

The University of Michigan’s Medical School has invested more than $300 million to transform the NCRC space. The EFDC is excited to join the numerous multidisciplinary centers and institutes within the complex, including the Biointerfaces Institute, Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research, Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care, Precision Health Initiative, and many more.

Our Center’s footprint in NCRC will focus on supporting not only administrative staff but also incoming faculty recruits as well as any of their research staff working in dry lab environments. Building out offices in the NCRC space will allow the EFDC to promote greater multidisciplinary collaborations across the University of Michigan.

RESEARCH

Excellence in research and scholarly activity is a core tenet of U-M’s mission. The broad scope and overall size of the U-M’s research enterprise, along with its emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches, contributes to Michigan’s global standing. National surveys consistently rank the university’s professional schools among the top 10, reflecting a research record of important publications and other contributions to the advancement of scholarship. As such, the faculty attracts generous financial support from the public and private sectors. The federal government is the largest supporter of research at U-M, providing $893M toward the overall research budget of $1.58B for FY2021.

The university envisions that the faculty will make contributions to society not only through research and scholarship, but also through the application of discoveries as innovative products and processes. U-M places a high priority on supporting this activity through the Office of Technology Transfer and the Business Engagement Center.

U-M is noted for its interdisciplinary research initiatives, such as nanoscience and technology, biomedical engineering, and life sciences that involve faculty from many units on campus, including the Medical School, the College of Engineering, and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. MICHIGAN MEDICINE

Michigan Medicine, with its hospitals, clinics, and satellite offices, Medical School, and School of Nursing, is one of the finest health systems in the country.

Health care professionals serve patients from every county in Michigan, as well as other states and countries. Michigan Medicine’s three hospitals and 1,107 beds saw almost 2.65M million patients in FY2021. The university also operates 40 outpatient locations with more than 120 clinics, and an extensive home care operation. The level of care delivered annually is extensive: 46,000 hospital stays, 16,000 observation cases, 95,000 emergency department visits, 51,000 operations and outpatient procedures, and 1,200 Survival Flight missions.

Michigan Medicine consistently ranks among the best nationally for the care at University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, Cardiovascular Center, Rogel Cancer Center, Comprehensive Diabetes Center, Depression Center, Geriatrics Center, Transplant Center and W.K. Kellogg Eye Center. The U-M Trauma Burn Center holds the highest national certification and is one of the nation’s most experienced burn centers. U-M is also certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Trauma Center for adults and children, and has one of only 11 Injury Control Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

ACCESSIBILITY & AFFORDABILITY

The University of Michigan is recognized nationally for its commitment to a diversity of people and ideas. The academic excellence of the institution rests in the wealth of the university’s students, faculty, and staff and their cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences.

Accessibility and affordability are complementary, and the university works to hold open its doors to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds. The University of Michigan has a longstanding commitment to provide financial aid to undergraduates that meets the full demonstrated need of admitted, in-state students to pay for tuition, room and board, textbooks and incidentals. In 2018, U-M launched the “Go Blue Guarantee,” which pledges the university to provide aid that at a minimum covers four years of tuition for any admitted in-state student whose family income is below $65,000 and with assets less than $50,000.

The central financial aid budget has grown 12% per year over the last decade. Aid packages combine need- and merit-based grants and scholarships, loans, and work study employment. In acknowledgment of real concern over the nation’s rising student loan debt, the university has worked hard to provide students with more and larger grants, which do not need to be repaid, and to reduce their reliance on loans. This includes $259M in grants and scholarships from university funds.

FACULTY & STAFF

The university has an overall work force of nearly 24,000 faculty and staff members, including Michigan Medicine and the Flint and Dearborn regional campuses.

The faculty headcount at U-M’s three campuses is 7,664 and the full-time-equivalent (FTE) total was 6,561. Instructional appointments comprise 3,566 FTEs, and another 2,995 FTEs are individuals with clinical, research and other titles who are primarily involved in health care, research, and related scholarly activities.

Staff members play essential roles in sustaining the university’s excellence. Representing an extraordinary range of occupations, U-M’s 16,000 staff members contribute to the efficient and productive operation of nearly all facets of the university.
